Money, Tipping, VAT

Tipping

Most restaurants now include a 12.5% service charge on bills so make sure you check before you tip too generously. Up market hotels are about the only other place you will be expected to tip apart from when taking a London Taxi where it would be a miracle if you escape with change from a ten pound note on any fare over eight pounds.

VAT

VAT is a goods and service tax set at 17.5% and which is already included in the price of nearly all goods you will purchase.

Currency

The currency in Britain is Pound Sterling, each pound is divided into 100 pence. You will find that most prices are rounded off to 99 pence so expect to carry quite a few pennies around with you!

Although the Euro is legal tender in the UK, places accepting it are few and far between.

Coins - 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 pence, £1, £2

Notes - £5, £10, £20, £50
