Colchester is one of Britain’s oldest settlements, as evidence suggests that communities have lived here since the 5th century B.C. And some 500 years later it was the major Roman centre of Camulodunum, which Queen Boudicca and the Iceni tribe later sacked. The Normans built a castle on the site of the Roman settlement, and it now houses a fascinating museum of local history. One of Colchester’s other major attractions is a zoo, which claims to have some of the best cat and primate collections in Europe.
