Southend is the closest resort to London, and the seven mile beach is flanked by amusement arcades, pleasure beaches, pubs and gardens; though if you look beyond the glare of the neon lights, you will see some fine Regency architecture, which dates from the time when a quiet fishing village became a bustling seaside destination. The town of Leigh-on-Sea lies to the east, and has a much more refined air about it. Medieval buildings survive in the Old Town, and down by the water’s edge are cockle sheds, selling cockles, mussels and whelks, among other seafood delicacies.
