Set in the heart of Breckland, Thetford is the locality’s main town, and the Danes even made it their capital after their 9th century invasion. Local attractions include Castle Hill, which is an Iron Age earthwork, topped with a Norman castle mound; the ruins of 12th Thetford Priory, and the museum of local history, situated in the Ancient House. The Forestry Commission created Thetford Forest in the 1920s, and now the 80,000-acre site is great for walking, nature watching, camping, biking, and generally being at one with nature.
