St Albans was one of the nation’s most important Roman centres, despite Queen Boudicca’s best efforts to destroy it. Visit the Verulamium Museum to discover more about this era of the city’s history. The Norman cathedral was built on the execution site of Britain’s first martyr, and his shrine is a site of national pilgrimage. Nearby are Shaw Corner, which was home to George Bernard Shaw for nearly fifty years; the Gardens of the Rose at Chiswell Green, which is the most important collection of roses in the world; and the grand Jacobean residence, Hatfield House.
