The North York Moors National Park is one of the most unspoilt areas in Britain. Fringed by rugged cliffs along the coast, it is an expanse of heather covered moorland, lost dales strewn with pretty stone villages such as Thornton-le-Dale, castles and abbeys. Castle Howard is one of the most splendid stately homes in the country and the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey near the market town of Helmsley are beautiful. Take the steam railway to the gothic harbour town of Whitby while the resort of Scarborough is a good base to explore the coast.
