York is a fine walled city of Georgian houses amidst Viking, Saxon and Roman remains; the glorious Minster is the largest medieval cathedral in Europe. Thirsk is the heart of James Herriot country, a rural landscape cut with dry stoned walls. The market town of Northallerton is an ideal base for exploring the Dales and North York Moors, while upmarket Harrogate and dramatic Knaresborough are also lovely Yorkshire towns. Harewood House is impressive and the ruins of 12th century Fountains Abbey are a World Heritage Site.
