Nantwich came to prominence in Roman times as an important salt producing centre, but much of the town was destroyed by fire in 1583, meaning there are few pre-Elizabethan buildings left. Stapely Water Garden is the world’s largest water garden, and the town’s most popular attraction, welcoming 1.5 million visitors each year. Little Moreton Hall, near Congleton, is one of the finest Tudor houses in the country, and one of the National Trust’s best-loved properties.
