Ullswater is the second largest lake in the area, and has a dark and brooding quality about it. During the summer months the lakeside communities of Glenridding, Pooley Bridge and Howtown are linked by passenger boats that cross the water. The Eden Valley is often overlooked because of its proximity to the Lakes, but it has its own charm and character; Kirkby Stephen and Appleby-in-Westmorland are well worth a visit.
