Windermere is at the heart of the Lake District, and is the largest of all the lakes. Bowness-on-Windermere is the principle waterside village, and is home to the World of Beatrix Potter. Towering over the north-east shore is Ambleside, one of the region’s most popular walking destinations, and close by are Grasmere and Rydal Water, where the poet William Wordsworth lived for many years.
