Wigan is probably best known as the spiritual home of the Northern Soul music scene, though sadly the hallowed boards of the casino dance floor have long since gone, along with the rest of the building. These days visitors to the town head to Wigan Pier, which is now tourist attraction, and features the Way We Were Heritage Centre and Opie’s Museum. Nearby, Rufford Old Hall is one of the county’s best Tudor houses, and is owned by the National Trust.
