With Scotland's former capital at Dunfermline and the site of two great English defeats, at the hands of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, at Stirling this region is central to Scottish history. Just north of Glasgow, the national park of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs gives a taste of the highlands and lochs Scotland is famous for. The ancient university town of St Andrews, birthplace and home of golf, is beautifully preserved and a good place to explore the pretty fishing villages along the Fife coast.
