A few years ago the Clevedon Pier, which juts out into the Severn Estuary, was restored to its former glory after tireless work by the Clevedon Pier Trust, who battled to save it from ruin after it partially collapsed in 1970. Today you can promenade its full length and enjoy the very English passion for piers. Other attractions include Clevedon Court Manor House, where William Makepeace Thackeray wrote much of 'Vanity Fair' and if you are fond of literary associations, why not try the 'Poet’s Walk' – said to have been a favourite of Tennyson and Coleridge.
