Ely lies in the heart of the Cambridgeshire Fens, and its soaring Norman cathedral can be seen for miles around. A Saxon princess, St. Etheldreda, founded this ancient settlement in the 7th century, when she established a religious community for both monks and nuns. The people of Ely resisted the Norman invasion longer than most, but were eventually conquered in 1071, and shortly after work began on one of the country’s loveliest cathedrals. Oliver Cromwell is a one-time resident the town, and his house in St. Mary Street is now a tourist information centre.
