St Neots is a small town in Cambridgeshire, England. It was originally developed next to a medieval priory in the form of market stalls, which were replaced years later as permanent forms so defined the boundaries of the Market Square.
The main history of the area begins with the founding of St Neots Priory. The Priory of St Neots was founded in medieval times and granted its own lands from Eynesbury in 1113. The grant caused a large divide in the Eynesbury parish, but let the monks of St Neots Priory form their own land and tenants into a separate township, which they named St Neots.
The newly formed town was firstly mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles of 1156-1157. But the final act was its recognition as a definite split from the parish of Eynesbury at about 1204, when the church acknowledged its total independence.
