Ha! Ha! brings to Colchester a down-to-earth dining 'experience' for locals of all ages. Just past the George Hotel at the end of the high street, this is a particularly cosy and smart venue, less quirky than most of its siblings in the chain.
The ground floor is taken up by a colourful bar, and a raised area furnished with big sofas in front of a modern (concrete alcove, fake coals) fireplace and an LCD screen showing the news, ads and uber-popular TV shows like Big Brother. One wall in three is painted in a vibrant raspberry, the others a calming neutral shade.
The main restaurant is downstairs in front of an open-kitchen and serves the usual Ha! Ha! mix of tasty comfort food (burgers, fish fingers, bangers and mash) and 'proper' dinners such as corn-fed chicken breast stuffed with Taleggio cheese, served with basil pesto and spinach pesto. On sunnier days, take your drinks outside to the continental-style outside seating area and watch the world go by.
