To the northwest of the Stour Valley is Sudbury, which as well as being the most sizeable town in the area, is the birthplace of Thomas Gainsborough, the leading English portraitist of the eighteenth century, his statue stand on Market Hill. The house where he was born is open to the public and has a collection of his works on show.

For centuries Sudbury was the home of the weaving and silk industry, giving the town a major historical legacy. Sudbury has been used for television locations, most significantly for BBC's Lovejoy.

Travelling in a southeasterly direction you will come to the extremely picturesque Stoke-by-Nayland. This is possibly the most attractive of the Stour Valley villages and is certainly worth a visit.
