Swaffham is a busy Norfolk market town, that has been chartered since the 13th century. Around the town are various depictions of the peddler of Swaffham, and the local church’s north aisle was, according to legend, funded by a pot of gold that he found in his garden. Howard Carter, who discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb in Egypt, spent much of his childhood in the town.
