If your spending the night in Newmarket, try to stay at the Rutland Arms, which is Newmarket’s oldest Inn, it is located on the grounds of Charles II’s old palace.
Every part of town life revolves around horse racing; a 2,500 acre heath surrounds Newmarket. It is home to the national stud and you will always see horses training on the heath. There are two courses in the town; the Rowley Mile, named after one of Charles II’s favourite horses, which is used for the spring and autumn meets and the July, which was used for summer racing.
Just outside the town is the Animal Health Trust, which is the only charitable institution in the UK engaged full-time in the diagnosis, cure and prevention of animal diseases.
