The ancient town of Bungay lies in the Waveney Valley in a loop created by the river. It was a Roman settlement and important military station, but returned to the rule of the Anglo Saxon kings until the Norman invasion.
Bungay Castle had fallen into a state of disrepair, but in 1987 the castle was presented to the townspeople and there is now a new visitor centre at the castle to make your trip more rewarding.
Other local attractions include the Buttermarket, where markets are held every Thursday, Holy Trinity Church, which is Bungay’s oldest building, and the Roman Well in the town centre.
Bungay is still a busy market town with good amenities and shops, particularly if you like browsing antiques! There is a local indoor swimming pool with a slide for kids.
