Dereham (or East Dereham as it is still sometimes known), the self-styled 'heart of Norfolk', it has many links with St. Withburga, daughter of the Christian King of the East Angles and sister of Etheldreda, who founded Ely Cathedral. Her relations with the town are commemorated in an unusual town sign at the entrance to the market place and the holy well at St Nicholas' Church.
St Nicholas' Church was started in Norman times and also has a 16th century bell tower. There is a window inside in memory of the poet William Cowper, who is buried in the churchyard.
Other local attractions include Bishop Bonner’s cottages, which are decorated with plasterwork fruits and flowers, using a technique called ‘pargeting’ which is commonly found around East Anglia.
