Oxford Street, despite being arguably the most famous street in the land, is universally loathed by Londoners. The old Roman road to Oxford, it became a fashionable high street in the 18th century with the spread of affluent middle classes westwards and has pretty much been the busiest shopping street in the country ever since.
If you can face the crowds, give it a whirl because all the big name, high street retailers have their flag ship stores here; TopShop's store is actually the biggest retail store in the world.
Head to Tottenham Court Road, at the eastern end of Oxford Street, for electrical goods (bargain hard and play the shops against each other!). Famous department store Selfridges is at the Western end of Oxford Street. Be sure not to take a trip down Oxford Street on Saturdays, it's not worth the headache!
