The Docklands stretches for six miles along the north bank of the Thames - from the vast newspaper industry of Wapping in the west to London City Airport in the east - as a kind of self-contained micro world. With more than 50,000 people working here it really is a city within a city. People live and work here and rarely venture into London itself.
It is a stunning setting, with the towering structures of Canary Wharf reflected in the wharfs and inlets of the Thames and there are bars, pubs and restaurants that do make the most of it; but for all this - its glistening glass and steel and its smart apartments.
