Hackney, East London is much like the rest of East London, it is a poor area. The Hackney Empire has been a famous venue for over a century and its past has included spells as a music hall, bingo hall, television studio and theatre. Since its refurbishment in 2001 it now offers everything from opera and ballet to pantomime, drama and comedy.
Victoria Park is a wonderful break from the grime of the streets. It was envisioned as a Regent's Park for the East End in 1842 and it is claimed to be the first truly public park in Britain. In the summer there are events and concerts and there is now a children's playground. The canal also runs alongside and can be explored in both directions.
