This particular stretch of the London canal system is known as The Regent's Canal and was built in 1801 to connect the Grand Junction Canal with the Thames at Limehouse. It is probably London's most interesting stretch of canal to explore, passing through the very heart of the capital.
Many people live on canals and many are easily accessible by the public - towpath walks are a popular way for Londoners to appreciate a bit of peace and for somewhere to take the dogs. What better way to enjoy them though than as they were intended, by barge or narrowboat.
The most popular and probably interesting stretch of the Regent's Canal is between Camden Lock and Little Venice in Maida Vale, which takes in Regent's Park and the London Zoo on its course. Little Venice is also a lovely stop with cute cafes and bars and places to eat.
