Overview

Finchley grew up along the Great North Road and has existed as a commuter suburb since the 1830's when there was a special stagecoach that travelled into the City each morning and this is still its main entry route.

It's not known for its character - Mock-Tudor is popular - and the pubs don't benefit from the charm of some of the city boroughs. Large detached houses, broad streets and closes with plenty of open, green space make this a desirable place to weather out evenings and weekends away from the heady stresses in town.

It is well provided for too; as well as the usual shops and restaurants, there is a bowling alley, multi-screen cinemas, tennis courts – and a new centre boasting, theatres, luxury flats and a health centre.
