Local SE16 restaurant

Posted by babylet from London, United Kingdom

We arrived at 8.30 on a busy Sunday evening and went for the 2-course menu at £17.50 which we thought represented good value, together with some olives and bread for starters.
No gripes about the starter, served in a civilised fashion with small forks. Two small glasses of wine at over £5 a glass were expensive, and not that good either judging by the sulphate residue at the bottom of the glass. For this place to work it should be BYO.
Waited forever for the mains (chicken wrapped in parma ham, cod fillet), and when they did arrive you felt there was more attention paid to styling the food rather than quality. All well and good in the West End, but not in SE16.
Pudding (sherry trifle) was dreadful, consisting of insipid watery custard and heavy, homemade biscuit base with just a hint of raspberry jam.
We paid and left, but don't think we'll be going back.

Response from Simplicity restaurant

As complaints are very rare at Simplicity and we take them extremely seriously.

The wines are all specially-selected and we have never received any negative comments regarding this. Indeed the complete opposite.

We prepare all dishes to order and try where possible to serve main courses within approximately 20 minutes.

The trifle has been a very popular dessert. The sponge base, and custard are made on-site. No negative comments have been received about this dish. However, we will look again at the amount of egg yolks used when making the custard.

I would like you to know that the chef cooking last Sunday has now been dismissed and I hope you will consider returning in the future.
