Dulwich streets are lined with attractive Georgian properties. The area has been settled since Saxon times, but it came to much greater prominence in 1619 when the local estate owner, Edward Alleyn, founded the College of God’s Gift.
Dulwich College is one of the oldest and most prestigious public schools in Britain. Edward Alleyn founded it in 1619. The college is covered in beautiful and historic buildings. It is a world famous school and often hosts open days where the public have access to a closer look at the ancient institution.
Sir John Soanes opened the Dulwich Picture Gallery in 1814; it included paintings by Rubens, Rembrandt, Watteau, and Van Dyck. The gallery was recently described as the most beautiful small art gallery in the world by the Sunday Telegraph, and is a worthy tribute to its founder, John Soanes, who also gave us the Soanes Museum in Lincoln’s Inn Fields.
