It is commonly thought that Blackheath got its name from the Black Death that killed the many people who are buried in the death pits around here. However, the truth is a lot less macabre – the heath is actually covered in a layer of black peat!
Blackheath is most famous for it’s annual ‘Rhododendron Festival’ held in November every year. The festival weekend includes some unusual activities such as the Chainsaw Competition. You can visit the Blackheath Rhododendron Gardens also, which are very beautiful.
Blackheath can boast a couple of sporting firsts: the first ever golf course in England was established here by the courtiers of King James I, and the oldest club in the rugby union code was formed here in 1858. The heath is also known as the city’s best kite-flying spot.
