Greenwich district is probably most famous for the meridian line that gives us Greenwich Mean Time, this place offers the visitor a wide choice of things to see and do. You can see the Cutty Sark, the most famous tea clipper ever built. You can see the boat Sir Francis Chichester single-handedly circumnavigated the world in, Gypsy Moth IV.

To learn more about Greenwich’s nautical history, go to the National Maritime Museum. The world’s biggest dome was built on the Meridian Line to herald the start of the new Millennium. Despite Tony Blair’s ridiculous assertion that the dome was the most exciting thing to happen anywhere in the World in the Year 2000. The dome’s future is very uncertain, so see it while you can, perched on the Greenwich peninsula.

Follow the Thames as it flows east and you will reach the Thames Flood Barrier at Woolwich. Melting polar ice caps mean that the water level of the Thames is rising by over 2 feet each year. Without this spectacular feat of modern engineering, London would be at real risk of flooding, and you can learn all about it at the Thames Barrier Information and Learning Centre.
