Barnes is on a very attractive stretch of the river Thames, if you follow it around to Putney you will be rewarded with some lovely views and welcoming inns.
Barnes gives you the sense that you are leaving the city behind. There is a lovely common which is a designated Local Nature Reserve, and has cricket and football pitches.
You will also find a small fishing lake, but the real draw for nature lovers has to be the London Wetland Centre, which opened in 2000 and has been awarded with Site of Special Scientific Interest status.
