The Royal Borough of Kensington is one of London's most exclusive, neighbouring upmarket Knightsbridge to the south and trendy Notting Hill to the north. Its busy unimpressive thoroughfare is Kensington High Street, one of the main shopping streets for West Londoners, with a mix of big name high street shops and smaller boutiques.

The high street was for years the home of Kensington Market. Quite at odds with its salubrious surroundings it was more in keeping with Camden Market or Carnaby Street than its swanky West London address and offered refuge for goths, punks, and hippies. It sadly closed in 2001 and has been the subject of rumours and conspiracy theories ever since.

Housed in the magnificent old building that used to be 'Barkers' department store is the Barkers Arcade, it is a fantastic place to shop, and it's primary focus is on independent boutiques but the arcade also has a number of chain stores.
