Reading and Leeds Festival, which are officially called ‘the Carling Weekend’ for promotional purposes began in 1961 and has since been getting ever increasingly more popular. The events both take place on the bank holiday weekend in August, and they share the same line-up with a couple of exceptions.
The festivals used to be strongly folk-oriented, but now they are more rock/alternative/indie/punk/metal. Famous bands from all over the globe come to perform to massive crowds of dedicated fans. In 1991 Nirvana played the first of their two appearances to massive crowds. Also in this year the first britpop bands such as Blur and Suede started to show themselves on the festival circuit.
The festival provides all you need for a weekend of dancing and screaming, superb stalls offering food and clothes from all over the world line the tracks from the camp ground to the arena. The Carling tent supplies you with all the beer you need and the camp ground offers that much needed head rest.

2009 marks the 250th anniversary of Scottish poet Robert Burns' birth. Burns was a poet and a lyricist and is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland.
The Burns Supper was started a few years after his death by a group of his friends; they held the supper to honour and remember Burns. The tradition caught on and the ritual of Burns Supper is now held all around the world.
His life and work will be celebrated throughout the year at many Burns-related events.
