Letchworth is in a very pretty, rural area, it is home to the country’s first garden city. The idea was to create a harmonious environment for residential and commercial districts to share. The First Garden City Heritage Museum and the Letchworth Museum and Art Gallery both trace the area’s history back to Roman times.
The riverside town of Hitchin is home to the Hitchin Museum, which houses the country’s largest collection of period costume. The museum also includes a Victorian Chemist and Physic Garden.
In nearby Lower Stondon there’s the Stondon Museum and Garden Centre, home to one of the country’s largest private collections of classic cars. The cars are all in working order, and date from the 1900s to the present day. The Shuttleworth Collection in the village of Old Warden is a fine collection of vintage aircraft, pride of place, belonging to a pristine condition Spitfire, this is just one of the many historic flying machines.
