There is a very ancient history in the village of Melbourn, Cambridgeshire. The Romans had settled there several thousand years ago and archaeologists have found Saxon graves and artefacts. The Doomsday Book (1086 AD) mentioned the village used to be Meldeburna, it was made up of 2460 acres of land and had only 55 families.

Melbourn has many beautifully built thatched cottages still remaining, despite the village being almost ruined by the great fire of 1917 and also the demolition of a number of unsafe cottages in 1930. The village is proud to be one of the ‘necklace villages’ that are a few small villages that form a ring around the south of Cambridge city.

The village once found fame when Queen Victoria rode through on her way to Cambridge and John Bunyan once preached at the Cross.
