Just to the north of St Albans is Ayot St Lawrence, home to the great playwrite George Bernard Shaw from 1906 until his death in 1950. Shaw Corner is open to the public it is a gorgeous Edwardian Villa left by him to the National Trust, it is full of personal belongings and memorabilia.
The tiny village itself has two churches and is in the glorious English setting of the rolling Hertfordshire countryside. It has a lovely pub, The Brocket Arms, which is said to be haunted serves ale, has fantastic food and great accomodation, if one has too many!
There is also another excellent bed & breakfast, The Old Rectory whose owners will happily point you in the direction of a good stroll.
