Hatfield is a slightly anonymous new town, probably now most famous for the Galleria, the 300,000 sq ft outlet shopping centre that straddles the A1.
Old Hatfield retains many historic buildings including the Old Palace, St. Etheldreda's Church and the most glorious stately home, Hatfield House.
Hatfield House is considered to be England’s finest Jacobean residence; the mansion features a gorgeous oak staircase and marble hall, and its huge collection of paintings and tapestries are world famous, while the gardens have nature trails, as well as lakes, woodland and formal gardens.
