Welwyn is a pretty village a few miles north of the new town of Welwyn Garden City, which was built in the 1920s.
In contrast, Welwyn has a long history with settlements as far back as the Iron Age as well as Roman occupation. You can still see the old Roman baths, slightly incogruously placed underneath Junction 6 on the A1.
These days it is a quiet place with plenty of charm and character. There are some good local pubs and places to eat and stay.
