Truly one of the world's great cities, Oxford overflows with history and culture. It really demands more than a fleeting visit. The city can be traced at least as far back as AD912, and it was already one of the country's largest towns by the time of the Norman Conquest, due to its central location and natural resources. Nowadays it is only one hour's train journey from greater-london.

Oxford, is of course dominated by its ancient and beautiful Oxford University but do not be mislead by the reputation of this fine city, the university is not the only attraction. The Town Hall is a stunning Victorian building and worth a visit. To take a peek into the history of Oxford, a trip to the Museum of Oxford is recommended.

You can't come to Oxford without trying your hand at punting, which entails guiding a flat-bottomed boat along either the Thames, or the Cherwell, the latter providing a better choice of pubs and picnic spots. Oxford has a fine choice of hotels, and bars and the shopping is great, catering for all budgets.
