Faringdon is in a strategic position between the Thames and Ridgeway it has given rise to a long history for the town. Faringdon (meaning 'fern-covered hill') was capital of the ancient kingdom of Wessex, this is where Alfred the Great had his castle.
Whilst in Faringdon it is worth checking out Buscot Park, an 18th century house which contains the Faringdon Collection of paintings and furniture. It is set in attractive Parkland; featuring two lakes, water gardens and a walled garden.
Faringdon House, was built for Lord Henry Pye in the 18th century. It has two storeys and five bays; over the attic storey, a hipped roof interrupted by the pediment. The interior, is not open to the public, but has a beautiful entrance hall and some elegant stucco work. The grounds of the building are fantastic and definitly worth a visit.
Whilst in this area you have to visit The White Horse it is a great place to join the Ridgeway, which is a national trail originally used by Iron Age Britons as a walkway. It stretches 85-miles to the northeast, and crosses the rural countryside of five counties.
