Oakham is well known for it's 12th Century Castle which stands just above the market place in the town centre. The Castle is open to the public and is occasionally used for Crown Court Sessions or Coroners’ Inquests. Nearby is the Rutland County Museum, which has free admission.
Barnsdale Gardens are the home of the BBC's Gardener’s World, it has 37 individual gardens and features, all of which blend into one 8 acre garden in the heart of the beautiful Rutland countryside.
Just east of the town is Rutland Water, the country’s second biggest manmade lake, which was created when the River Gwash was damned. With about 24 miles of foreshore it offers a variety of water-sport activities.
