Ashbourne in Dove Dale can lay claim to being one of Derbyshire’s most attractive market towns. Its narrow streets are full of historic buildings and its position as the southern 'gateway’ to the Peak District, means it is a great base from which to explore the wider area.
Church Street is the main street through Ashbourne, it is where the Mansion House stands, which once belonged to Dr. John Taylor, who was a great friend of Samuel Johnson. Another notable building is Ashbourne Hall, where Prince Charlie stayed in the mid-18th century, the building now houses the town’s public library.
South of the town is a late 17th century property, Sudbury Hall, which has an impressive interior and arguably one of the finest staircases in an English country house. It is best known as the home of the National Trust’s Museum of Childhood, which features exhibits on all aspects of childhood from the 18th century to the Edwardian period.
