Matlock and Matlock Bath lie in the Derwent Valley in the shadow of the Peak District National Park. In the late 17th century thermal springs were discovered in the area and about 150 years later it became a fashionable spa when textile manufacturer John Smedley built a grand hydro by a crossing of the River Derwent.
Matlock Bath stretches along the valley floor, alongside the river and is overshadowed by the Heights of Abraham and High Tor. There is cable car lift that goes from Matlock Bath to the Tree Tops Visitor Centre on Heights of Abraham, or more energetic people may prefer to walk. If you have the energy the very best views are to be had from the Victoria Prospect Tower. There are also two caverns the Great Rutland & the Great Masson, which you can visit.
Between August and October the riverside and boats of Matlock Bath are illuminated by the Venetian Lights Festival, though the area is more frequently likened to Switzerland, on a smaller scale.
