Spalding in Lincolnshire is one of the main bulb growing centres in the country and over half Britain’s flowers are grown here. Each spring acres and acres of tulips and daffodils surround the town, which celebrates flower power with the annual Spalding Flower Parade in May. Springfields Garden is a 25-acre site given over to the study and practise of horticulture and has various public open days between March and May.
The River Welland cuts through the town, where seven bridges span it and Ayscoughfee Hall stands by the riverside and houses a museum of local history.
Other attractions around the town include the 13th century church of St. Nicholas & St. Mary, which features an unusual double aisle and the Romany Museum, where you can see a collection of Romany wagons and harnesses, as well as a slide show depicting the traditional Romany way of life. Alternatively you can take a day trip in a varso, or horse drawn wagon.
