Market Drayton is an attractive old market town that is mentioned in the Doomsday book. Originally called ‘Draitune’, which most likely means the ‘Market’ would have been added some time after 1245, when the town received its charter 750 years later the tradition is still going strong and each Wednesday some of the streets are closed off to accommodate the traders and their stalls.
The predominantly 14th century church still has some Norman details and there are a number of 17th century half-timbered buildings around the town, you should also check-out the Butter Market and Sandbrook’s Vaults.
Clive of India was born near Market Drayton in 1725 and there is a town-trail that will help you learn more about him. The Shropshire Union Canal passes by the town, one of the last to be built in the country it links Wolverhampton with Ellesmere Port on Merseyside.
