As with all the landlocked areas of the Midlands, no ferries can take you direct to Birmingham. If arriving in the UK by ferry, the closest international port is at Hull. The south coast ports are within a 3 to 4 hour drive.

Distances & driving time from Birmingham to UK ports:

  • Hull - approx 140 miles, 2 hours 30 mins - M6, M62
  • Southampton, Hants - 137 miles, 2 hours 45 mins - M4 and M3
  • Harwich, Essex, approx 175 miles, 3 hours 30 mins - M6 and A14 for ferries to the Hook of Holland
  • Dover Hoverport Terminal, Kent - approx 205 miles, 3 hours 30 mins - M1, M25, M2 and M20

Midlands Canals

Known as "The Venice of the North," Birmingham is also at the hub of the British waterways system. Travel along the Trent and Mersey canal by narrowboat or explore the Grand Union Canal, River Soar, Coventry or Oxford canals.
