Durham & Teesside Travel Guide

Durham Cathedral - P Sarah Saunders

Durham is a compact university city with one of the most inspiring cathedrals in Britain, perched overlooking the River Wear. To the west lies the unspoilt desolate moorland of the north Pennines while to the east are the once thriving coal mining centres around Middlesborough and the River Tees. Along the coast are some pleasant genteel seaside towns such as Saltburn, the livelier Redcar and the quaint harbour town of Staithes.
