Durham has one of the finest surviving examples of a Norman cathedral in the country. The castle dates from the same period but has been extended and refurbished throughout the ages, and so now bears the traces of many architectural styles. No longer the official residence of the prince-bishops, it now plays home to the students of University College, and both the castle and the cathedral have been awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status. The historic town is very compact and contained in a loop in the River Wear, making it very easy to explore on foot.
