County Durham was ruled by the Bishop Princes for centuries and Auckland Castle, Bishop Auckland was their main countryseat, where they would come to hunt and relax. These days the castle is the official home to the Archbishop of Durham and lies at the heart of the See.

The first stones were laid in the 12th century and the castle has been developed and extended every 200 years since then. Highlights include the Chapel, Throne Room and Long Dining Room.
