Hartlepool has a long and rich history. The Museum of Hartlepool covers the town’s history from pre-historic times to the present day. Recently voted 'most popular new visitor attraction' by the English Tourist Board the museum has plenty to offer everyone and best of all entrance is free.

Hartlepool Historic Quay has had much renovation work carried out on it and is certainly a worthwhile attraction. Additionally the local Art Gallery is housed in the unusual venue of a beautifully restored Victorian church.

A wishing well in the form of a monkey recalls the most famous legend associated with the town. During the Napoleonic Wars a French ship was wrecked just off the coast. The ship’s monkey, was washed ashore and the naïve locals assumed it must be a Frenchman and promptly tied him on the beach and hung him from the ship’s mast.
